About Me

Hi, I'm Megan - founder of At Home in the Forest. I'm so glad you're here.
My path to homeschooling and forest school has been an incredible adventure that has led me to exactly where I’m meant to be.
I grew up in Waterloo and always loved learning, but traditional school wasn’t the right fit for me. Even though I succeeded academically, I struggled socially and emotionally, often tying my sense of worth to grades and external approval. These experiences shaped my deep belief that education should nurture a student's whole self — their curiosity, confidence, well-being and connection to the world around them.
For many years, I followed my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. I spent two decades achieving that goal and another decade practicing before motherhood shifted my perspective. Since becoming a mom in 2015, my children have been my greatest teachers. They inspired my journey into gentle parenting and child-led learning.
Becoming a Home Educator
Throughout high school, university and beyond, I naturally gravitated toward teaching roles, where I loved helping students understand themselves as learners and feel supported on their journey.
My homeschooling story began after my two eldest children started public school, where they did not thrive. The pandemic gave us the gift of time together in nature — we spent our days exploring forests and rivers, reading stories under the trees, and rediscovering the joy of learning. Later, our travels to Mexico and connection with a wonderful forest school teacher there confirmed what I already felt: children thrive when they have the freedom to explore and connect.
Back in Canada, we joined a local forest school community and continued our homeschooling journey. We still spend as much time outdoors as possible — hiking, camping, and learning through every season.
I believe deeply in kindness, compassion, and emotional safety. Every child deserves to be treated with respect and dignity as the fully-formed human they are. My approach is rooted in gentle guidance, curiosity, and collaboration — helping children thrive and discover confidence and joy in learning.
