Our Ethos
We believe childhood should be unhurried, wonder-filled, and deeply connected to the natural world.

In a world that pushes children to achieve more, sit still longer, and perform better, we offer something radical: the freedom to simply be.
At Home in the Forest was born from a belief that children don't need more structured activities or screen time. They need mud between their toes, branches to climb, and space to follow their curiosity wherever it leads.
Here, there are no tests, no grades, no pressure. Just open-ended exploration guided by experienced educators who understand that the most profound learning happens when children feel safe, seen, and free.
Scientists have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain, unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10-20 repetitions.Dr. Karyn Purvis
We don't decide what children should learn. We create the conditions for them to discover what calls to them.
Every child arrives with their own questions, interests, and way of seeing the world. We provide tools and invitations (rope, tarps, books, art supplies, natural materials) and let their curiosity guide the journey. Some days become grand adventures; others are quiet observations. Both are equally valuable.
At the heart of everything we do is relationship. We nurture connections between children, between siblings, between children and educators, and between each child and the natural world. In a small, intimate setting, children have space to truly know one another: to resolve conflicts, celebrate victories, and build the deep friendships that childhood should hold.
There's no such thing as bad weather, only weather that teaches us something new. Rain becomes a chance to study water flow and build dams. Cold teaches us about preparation and resilience. Each season brings its own gifts, and children who learn outdoors year-round develop a profound comfort with the natural cycles of the earth.
Play isn't a break from learning. It is how children learn. Through imaginative play, children process emotions, develop social skills, build physical strength, and make sense of their world. We protect and honour this sacred work of childhood, knowing that the skills they develop through play will serve them for a lifetime.
These aren't just words on a page. They're the principles that guide every decision, every interaction, and every moment in the forest.
Building meaningful relationships with the land, with each other, and with the natural world that surrounds us. We believe children thrive when they feel a sense of belonging.
Child-led exploration that honours wonder and encourages questions. We follow the spark of interest wherever it leads, trusting that true learning emerges from genuine curiosity.
Developing trust in themselves through real experiences and thoughtfully managed risks. Every small challenge overcome becomes a foundation for lifelong self-belief.
Being fully here and now, experiencing life as it unfolds. In a world of constant distraction, we create space for children to simply be, to notice, and to wonder.
Cultivating deep respect and care for the natural environment. When children fall in love with the forest, they become its protectors for life.
This isn't daycare with trees. It's a fundamentally different approach to childhood.
Small groups mean every child is truly seen, heard, and supported.
Rain or shine, we're in the forest, building resilience and connection to nature.
Just natural materials, open-ended play, and endless possibilities.
Your traditionally-schooled child is anxious or overwhelmed by traditional school environments
Your homeschooled child needs more social opportunities outdoors, and another team member in their learning journey
You’re watching your child losing their natural curiosity and creative spark
The rigid structure of conventional education feels wrong for your family
You value emotional well-being and social connection as much as (or even more than) academic achievement
You want your child to develop resilience, confidence, and a love of nature
If you've felt like your child needs outdoor time and deeper social connections, trust that instinct. You know your child better than anyone, and seeking something different isn't giving up. It's showing up for who they really are.
Visit us in the forest. See what's possible when children have the time and space to be themselves and connect, outdoors.
